No quantitative population data are available for this species. It is known from 24 collections which were collected between 1860 and 2009. At least 14 collections were made between 1956-1976 but only 5 collections have been made since then, although this is likely to be the result of a reduction in collection effort.

The main threat to this species is associated with increased agricultural use of dambos (seasonally wet grasslands) across its entire range. Livestock grazing in dambos is widespread and has been shown to cause changes in plant community composition (Dahwa et al. 2014, Mfune 2017) which has the potential to impact Scleria erythrorrhiza. Crop cultivation within potential habitat has also increased in Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia (Roberts 1988, Wetlands International 2009, Leemhuis et al. 2017). Coupled with this is increased utilization of water resources from wetland habitats in the species range (von der Heyden 2004) which may impact the quality of habitats for S. erythrorrhiza. Some localities where the species has been collected from in the past show increased urban development since the collection on Google Earth (2019), for example at Bukoba and Lihwena in Tanzania and Mugwi in Zambia, which may threaten the habitat of the species.
