S. radicans is classed as Endangered in Germany, Vulnerable in Finland, Hungary and Norway, Near Threatened in Estonia and Sweden and Data Deficient in Croatia (although it is not certain that it occurs in the last country). Elsewhere it appears to be widespread with stable populations.

S. radicans is considered to be of conservation concern in at least half of the countries from which it has been reported, however the reason for this is unclear.
