The species is known from between 50-55 occurrences, with some (13-40) having good viability. Massachusetts is believed to support the single largest population, with an estimated 1/4 of the world's acreage occupied by the species at a single site. The species has its greatest abundance in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, in eastern Massachusetts, and in Nova Scotia. This species is often locally abundant in appropriate, pristine habitat. While it is difficult to determine number of individuals (it is a rhizomatous species), it is estimated that there are over 100,000 ramets globally (NatureServe 2014).
It is unknown if the species overall population is stable or declining. According to NatureServe (2014) the species short-term population trend is increasing (>10%), however, the species is apparently in decline in the southern portion of its range (NJ, NY, CT) and is stable (with our knowledge of its abundance greatly expanding) in the northern portion of its range (MA, ME, and NS) (NatureServe 2014). A considerable number of additional locations likely remain to be discovered in both Canada and the USA (NatureServe 2014, Environment Canada and Parks Canada Agency 2015).

Potential threats include fire suppression, wetland degradation, water level/hydological changes and water quality degradation (eutrophication) and development (of uplands) and resultant changes in plant community dynamics (such as establishment of Phragmites australis), off road vehicles, and succession. In Canada there is potential threat from hydroelectric development (NatureServe 2014). In Canada the species has a restricted range and is threatened by a combination of limited sexual reproduction and a significant reduction of one site due to road development (Environment Canada and Parks Canada Agency 2015). The species is also probably vulnerable to competition with Phragmites australis.

Monitoring is needed to determine year to year changes in population sizes and trends. Management of known sites by controlled burning to stimulate flowering, to provide suitable habitats for seedling establishment and to reduce competition in the surrounding area, so the population may expand is also recommended (NatureServe 2014). The species has a management plan for the Canadian populations (Environment Canada and Parks Canada Agency 2015).
