This species is quite common, close to sea level, along the northern coast of Puerto Rico. It is also very common on Hispaniola, where is inhabits almost all environments (apart from very dry places) (Zona 1996) in some cases forming Royal Palm Forests, for example in the Yuna delta, Samana Province (Ministerio De Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales 2018).

There are several ex situ collections of this species (BGCI 2023). Although it has a large distribution in the Dominican Republic, this species is considered as Vulnerable in the National Red List (Garcia et al. 2016) because of its overexploitation and habitat destruction (Peguero et al. 2015). It is found in various protected areas.
