The species has localised subpopulations with a scattered distribution. It is fairly common at some sites, especially in the Mehdia coastal area and on limestone substrates, but it is rarer on siliceous substrates (e.g., Camp Boulhaut in Bensliman) (Maire 1959, Tahri et al. 2011, Rankou et al. 2013). The population trend is inferred to be declining due to several threats including overgrazing, agricultural intensification and urban development, among others.

The population and habitats are locally declining because of numerous anthropogenic threats such as habitat fragmentation and deterioration of the surrounding environments due to overgrazing, agricultural intensification, urban, touristic and infrastructure development, climate change, drought, random harvesting, irregular fires and deforestation of the neighbouring mountains which increases the soil erosion and the disappearance of the species, as the disturbances are highly frequent and strong (Rankou et al. 2015).
