The main threats to this species are habitat reduction and change due to human disturbance (industrial, agricultural and residential development).

This species occurs within the Aripo Savannas Scientific Reserve (Long Stretch Reserve), which was declared an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) in 2007. An ESA is the highest level of protected area status currently existing in Trinidad and Tobago. This, however, does not guarantee effective protection. Before 2007 the area was already a Scientific Reserve, which on paper also protected it from disturbance and restricted access to the area for scientific and educational purposes only. Human encroachment still occurred.
