The taxon is potentially threatened by deforestation due to land-use change for agricultural activities like coffee plantations. And to a lesser extent, but also causing impact to the taxon is road construction. At the moment these roads are terracerías (dirt roads) which are very likely to be paved in the future causing even further damage to the habitat and the population. In Chiapas and Oaxaca, the forests have been subjected to human disturbance over a prolonged period, as traditional land use involved shifting agriculture followed by land abandonment, providing opportunities for the forest to recover. However, this traditional form of land use is now being abandoned, and agriculture is increasingly being intensified in fixed locations through fertilizers, limiting forest opportunities. There is clear evidence of interactions between fragmentation and other anthropogenic impacts. The following forms of anthropogenic disturbance are chronic and widespread: logging of timber, fuelwood cutting, browsing by livestock, and development of infrastructure (principally roads) (Arroyo-Rodíguez et al. 2015).

There is one ex situ collection (BGCI 2021). This species was evaluated as Possibly Threatened (I) in 1997 (Walter and Gillett 1998). This species occurs within the communal protected area Los Chimalapas in Oaxaca. This species is legally protected in Mexico by the national list of species at risk of extinction, NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, where it is listed under the category “threatened” (A; SEMARNAT 2010).
