No quantitative population information exists for this species. However, it is known to be common throughout its range. It becomes most abundant in its southern most part of its large range. Quercus glaucoides occurs quite regularly in transition areas between pine-oak forests and tropical deciduous forests south of the Trans-Volcanic belt, the central portion of Mexico, where is it a dominant species. This species had been notes as an important element of tropical dry forests in shrublands and oak-pine forests (Villarreal 1986).

Isolated oaks and small woodland fragments increased Cynipid gall abundance and species richness in Quercus glaucoides. Cynipid abundance and species richness were also higher along fragment edges in comparison with fragment interiors (Maldonado-Lopez et al. 2015).

Phytophthora cinnamomi, the soil borne water mold, can infect Q. glaucoides. With the onset of symptoms this species declines rapidly and within several weeks to several months dies (Tainter 2000).

Quercus glaucoides is threatened by land use change and deforestation that is common in Mexico. For example in the Cupatitzio River sub-basin in Michoacan, where Q. glaucoides is dominant in the pine oak forests in the area, the surface covered by pine, pine–oak, and tropical low deciduous forests was reduced 23% between the years 1975 and 2008, mainly because of conversion to agricultural and urban uses (Bravo-Espinosa et al. 2012).
