While Quercus glaucescens is (seemingly) widespread, subpopulations occur in isolated patches throughout its range. Populations are fragmented from one another, especially in the northern part of this species range. The subpopulation that occupies Jalisco is restricted to the Pacific side, occurring along/near the coast.

The 'Manual de la Biodiversidad de Encinos Michoacanos' describes this species as endangered due to its restricted distribution and transformation of habitat by fire, logging and farming in Michoacán, specifically (Arizaga et al. 2009). Threats to other subpopulations, aside from fragmentation, are not well understood.
