There is little information regarding the population size, trend, and dynamics of Quercus fuliginosa. More surveying and research is needed to better understand the population of this species.

There is little information available regarding the threats of Quercus fuliginosa, but the forests of Hainan province where the species occurs is subject to deforestation that may be affecting the species. A study by Zhai et al. (2015) found that natural forests area in Hainan decreased from 104,023 ha to 16,306 ha between 1995 and 2005. Rubber plantations have increased steadily from 1988 to 2005 while pulp plantations have rapidly expanded from 1995 to 2005. This pattern was seen in protected areas as well. Land conversion can cause habitat loss and fragmentation. These changes threaten local biodiversity, especially for endemic species. More research and surveying is needed to understand how these threats affect Q. fuliginosa and its habitat.
