This oak is not regarded as rare within its range, but is reported to grow in abundance locally on favourable sites, even forming pure stands on flat, level sites in the Sierra Madre Occidental (González-Elizondo et al. 2012). The largest subpopulation is in Durango, whereas the subpopulation in Zacatecas is very small and faces much more severe habitat decline (J. Sabás Rosales pers. comm. 2017).

Quercus durifolia faces threats from the clearing of land for agriculture and grazing of livestock, which has resulted in rapid deforestation and fragmentation of habitat across Mexico, particularly in temperate forests. these impacts are especially apparent in the states of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes (J. Sabás Rosales pers. comm. 2017). While these threats are well-documented, little information is available documenting the effects they have had directly on Q. durifolia. It has "medium" survival problems according to Rangel (2015).

While Quercus durifolia is not currently the target of concentrated conservation efforts, the species is known to occur in protected lands and parks. According to BGCI, this species is maintained in three ex situ collections (BGCI 2017). However, further efforts to promote ex situ conservation within Mexico should be pursued, given reports that little attention has so far been paid to this valuable method of protecting oak biodiversity (Gómez-Mendoza and Arriaga 2007). Additionally, given the lack of available information on this species' threats, harvest and population trends, its status should be researched and monitored to assure it is not currently, and does not in the future become, threatened.
