There have been no quantitative studies on the populations size of Quercus diversifolia and often accounts of the species are misleading as they have been misidentified. However, due to its small range and increasing amounts of urban expansion from Mexico City it can be assumed that its population is decreasing. Mapped occurrences and expert opinion (O. Soto pers. comm.) reveal that Q. diversifolia has a severely fragmented population.

Unfortunately, poverty and corruption play an important role in the deforestation of forests in most of the State of Mexico and this is no exception where Quercus diversifolia is located. Additionally, much of Q. diversifolia's population is in or near Mexico City and exposed to urban growth because of the accelerated growth of Mexico City and its metropolitan area. The entire metropolitan area of ​​Mexico City and the periphery of the state of Mexico has seen an unreasonable growth over the years; favoring the clearing of areas with vegetation and increasing the urban footprint (O. Soto pers. comm. 2017).
