Although there is no quantitative information on the population size of Q. delgadoana, it can be inferred that the population is declining. Studies from the beech forests in Hidalgo, where Q. delgadoana sampling has been the most active, indicate that it is a dominant tree in areas with minimal human disturbance such as La Mojonera and El Medio Monte. In contrast, when Q. delgadoana has been identified in El Gosco forest it has only been found as isolated individuals. There are high levels of disturbance in the El Gosco forests with illegal logging of Quercus spp. which has resulted in an altered species composition. The habitat of beech forests has also been declining, only 11 of the original 14 beech forests in Hidalgo have been relocated. This represents the majority of beech forests communities as Hidalgo contains 73.9% of this forest type in Mexico (Chanes 2014, Ortiz-Quijano 2016).

The cloud forest communities in eastern Mexico, where Quercus delgadoana is found, are highly disturbed as a result of the extraction of firewood, the establishment of coffee plantations, and the clearance of forest for pasture (Valencia 2011, González-Espinosa 2011). Cloud forests are a naturally limited habitat and deforestation has further isolated forest patches (Toledo-Aceves 2014). Quercus species are selectively logged for firewood in the beech forests plant associations where Q. delgadoana can be found as a dominant species. As a result, the composition of the canopy has changed as well as the structural values of the species; there has been an increase in species that can be considered opportunistic, indicators of disturbance and/or of a warmer climate and lower water availability (Chanes 2014).
