It occurs abundantly in the seasonally dry pine-oak forest. At lower elevations (1,830 m), east of Cuale, numerous seedlings are also found.

This mountainous portion of the Sierra Madre del Sur is rich in mineral soils; the Companiia Minera Zimapan, S.A. (Unidad Cuale) mined copper, zinc, gold and silver for 20 years (1963-1983) (González-Villarreal 2003). Current threats to the Sierra de Cuale consist of livestock grazing and increased urbanization due to tourism (Romero Bartolo et al. 2013). According to expert review, the species and its habitat are also affected by illegal pine logging.
