Populations of Quercus crspipilis are rather scarce and can be dense where found (González-Espinosa et al. 2011). There are no quantitative studies of this species population size, but it is often a dominant in the forest fragments where it is found (Jiménez-Ferrer et al. 2007). Habitat fragmentation caused by traditional land use patterns may not not seem to hinder, and may even facilitate, the natural regeneration of tropical highland pine-oak forests, as it has been reported that Q. crispipilis is not able to regenerate under deep shade, but requires open patches in which browsing and trampling by ungulates is absent or minimal (Quintana-Ascencio et al. 1992).

Since pre-Columbian times, extensive areas of forests in the highlands of Chiapas have been cleared for shifting cultivation of annual crops and logged for fuelwood and charcoal burning. Traditional land use patterns in the highlands of Chiapas are similar to those occurring elsewhere in populated tropical high land areas where Quercus crispipilis is also found. Under less-intensive land use, shifting agriculture in forested regions resulted in a heterogeneous landscape with stands of widely varying succession stages. More recently, this heterogeneity has tended to decrease as more extensive areas are permanently used as grazing lands, as the number of livestock per family has increased and as demand for basic cropland, commercial crops (tomato and chilli), fuel-wood, and timber has also increased (Quintana-Ascencio et al. 1992, Jiménez-Ferrer et al. 2007).
In Guatemala, Quercus crispipilis has been shown to grow faster in open sites than in forested stands. However, browsing and trampling by sheep, which typically occurs in non-forested habitats under current land use practices, was a common cause of plant death and biomass removal in the open stands (Quintana-Ascencio et al. 1992). Additionally, it was noted during the Global Trees Specialist Group meeting (Costa Rica 2019) that Guatemalan montane and pine-oak forests are disappearing, indicating a threat of declining habitat. This species has also been reported as sensitive to climate change and, in one study, was projected to lose anywhere from 13.1%- 48.4% (depending on the severity of the climate model used) of its suitable habitat by 2050. However, the same study also noted that adaptation to disturbed environmental conditions have been documented for Q. crispipilis (Gómez-Mendoza and Arriaga 2007).
