État de la populationExpert
Quercus crassifolia occurs abundantly across a wide geographic and altitudinal range throughout Mexico and Guatemala. This species is known to grow in large occurrences, sometimes forming dense, pure stands, and to regenerate well. While habitat destruction remains a cause for concern for many tree species throughout Latin America, the population of Q. crassifolia is believed to remain robust and secure globally at the present time.

Description complète des menacesExpert

Quercus crassifolia faces threats from the clearing of land for agriculture, ranching and urban development, which has resulted in rapid deforestation and fragmentation of habitat across Mexico. Additionally, a recent study determined Q. crassifolia likely to be moderately sensitive to climate change, based on models that predicted a distribution decrease of approximately 12- 18% (Gomez-Mendoza and Arriaga 2007). While this species remains common and largely abundant, and while such a decline alone would not drive Q. crassifolia into a threatened Red List category, such projections warrant future attention for this species and other oak species likely to face similar declines.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
While Quercus crassifolia is not currently the target of conservation efforts, this species is maintained in fifteen ex situ collections, according to BGCI. However, further efforts to promote ex situ conservation within Mexico should be pursued, given that a 2007 report suggested little attention has been paid to this valuable method of protecting oak biodiversity.
