État de la populationExpert
No information exists on a quantified population size for Q. chihuahuensis. This species, however, has a wide range and occurs fairly regularly throughout. A small subpopulation exists in the northern part of the Reserva de la Biosfera de La Michilía (Durango), which is a protected area. The vast majority of the population does lie outside of protected areas throughout Mexico. In the Sierra de Mazatán region, Q. chihuahuensis is considered one of four oaks among outstanding importance in this region. The relict subpopulations in Texas occur in Hudspeth County within the Quitman and Eagle Mountains, but the viability of the two subpopulations is unknown and extensive introgression with Q. grisea and Q. arizonica has been noted.

Description complète des menacesExpert
Cattle raising is the traditional and predominant productive activity in the Sierra de Mazatán area. Sheep raising on rancho Palo Bonito on top of the sierra is a recent activity according to local ranchers. Tourism is another known threat to this species especially during vacations when the area attracts some visitors to the oak woodland on top of the Sierra. Fires were known to be a threat to this area about a decade ago however, more recent field work has identified this threat to be at low levels of magnitude at present.
