Quercus chapmanii

Quercus chapmanii occurs almost exclusively in Florida, although coastal scrubs extend into adjacent parts of Alabama and Georgia. Though there are no direct threats specific to the species itself, the quality of its habitat faces many threats. Being that scrub community is not particularly pleasing and sits on high and dry ground, this ecosystem and many of its species are rapidly being lost to development. Scrub is also readily damaged by off-road vehicle traffic or even foot traffic, which destroys the delicate ground cover and allows the loose sand to erode. Additionally, scrub is essentially a fire maintained community. Ground vegetation is extremely sparse and leaf fall is minimal, thus reducing the chance of frequent ground fires. Such fires allow for the regeneration of the scrub community which might otherwise succeed to xeric hammock communities.

This species exists in eight ex situ sites around the world in botanical gardens and arboreta. Additionally, it is categorized as globally secure (G5) by NatureServe.
