Quercus castaneifolia is found in a small range of central Asia, with most populations in mountain ranges lining the southern coast of the Caspian Sea.

Quercus castaneifolia is endemic to the relic Hyrcanian forests in Northern Iran and Southeastern Azerbaijan. The forests are subject to land conversion for agriculture and urbanization. One study from Shooshtari et al. (2018) found a decrease in forest cover between 1984 and 2010 and projected continuing decline through to 2030. Though forest decline does not represent a 1:1 decline in population size, habitat decline does pose a potential threat to Quercus castaneifolia. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) also reported agriculture and grazing as threats to Hyrcanian forests and its endemic species.

Multiple sites through Hyrcanian Forests in Iran have been identified and protected as World Heritage Centres by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). These sites cover occurrences of Quercus castaneifolia and therefore serve as protection for the species and its habitat. Q. castaneifolia is also a highly cultivated species and is protected in at least 68 ex situ collections according to BGCI's PlantSearch (2020).
