There have not been quantitative surveys on the overall population size of Quercus calophylla. It is a widespread species in Mexico, however, it doesn't form extensive forests, instead it grows as scattered trees between other members of the forest (S. Valencia pers. comm. 2015).

Quercus calophylla is located in zones of temperate climate that are preferred for human settlement and crops, and is threatened with habitat transformed to avocado orchards (S. Valencia pers. comm. 2015). They also are a preferred host for Oak gall wasps.

This species is found in 15 ex situ collections world wide (BGCI 2017). It is also found in the protected areas of Reserva Ecológica Sierra de San Juan, Nayarit; Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Sierra de Quila; and Estación Biológica Cerro Huitepec, Chiapas (Santiago Pérez 2002).
