Quercus braianensis is mostly restricted to southern Viet Nam, with isolated pockets in north and south Lao PDR. The species is rare, and known only from a few, scattered sites.

There is a projected threat in terms of habitat degradation, and reduction in area of occupancy (AOO), due to conversion of habitat for coffee cultivations. The species may also be vulnerable to firewood collection, but this requires confirmation.

Due to the rarity of this species, urgent surveys of known sites and adjacent protected sites with similar habitat are recommended. Many of the localities where this species occurs are not near protected areas, or in lowland areas often not included in protected areas. In particular, given the small number of historically known populations, and uncertainty in their persistence to this day, inclusion in ex situ collections is strongly recommended. Quercus braianensis is not listed in any ex situ collections (BGCI 2020).
