Several subpopulations of Quercus chrysocalyx have been found in Lai Chau (Binh Lu), Lao Cai (Sa Pa), Quang Ninh (Tien Yen: Khe Va). Some subpopulations have been also found in Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia and China.

Quercus chrysocalyx is threatened by habitat degradation as distribution areas of this species are fragmented forest. Habitats have also been cleared through the exploitation of forest for timber.
