There is little literature about Quercus austrocochinchinensis available. The population is at risk for decline due to hybridization with Quercus kerrii (Song et al. 2014). A study by An et al. in 2017 looked at the morphological diagnostic traits of Q. austrocochinchinensis and Q. kerrii and found there were fewer Q. austrocochinchinensis purebreds than previously expected. Q. austrocochinchinensis is common in Viet Nam.

Quercus austrocochinchinensis is especially prone to hybridization with other oaks, particularly with the common and widespread Quercus kerrii species. This hybridization indicates potential future threat to the pure Q. austrocochinchinensis, (Song et al. 2014). A study by An et al. 2017 reports that Q. austrocochinchinensis is threatened by shrinking/degrading habitat and hybridization with Q. kerrii, therefore facing critical extinction risks. Q. austrocochinchinensis is also impacted by other threats including logging, habitat clearance, and harvesting for firewood.

Quercus austrocochinchinensis exists in at least one ex situ collection (Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden). An et al. (2017) suggests the first step of conservation to be in situ conservation by establishing nature reserves.. The next step is to begin ex situ conservation, especially separate from Q. kerrii to avoid the threat of increased hybridization. Additional monitoring of the species as well as field observations/research of its populations throughout the rest of its range should also be considered.
