Quercus argyrotricha is a very rare species of oak that is only known from five samples in Guizhou, Yunnan, and Hunan provinces of China. As the species is only known from five samples, it is estimated that the population size is less than 50 mature individuals.

As the species has a restricted distribution, it is likely threatened by habitat destruction and land changes. In addition, the type locality of Quercus argyrotricha appears to be in, or on, limestone complexes. Extensive limestone excavation is taking place in both Yunnan and Guangxi and may be affecting individuals in this region.
