This species was listed as Vulnerable by Oldfield and Eastwood (2007), however not included in the Red Data Book for Cyprus (Tsintides et al.(2007) due to generally stable conditions, a very large population (considerably larger than 10,000 individuals) and a relatively large extent of occurrence (C.S. Christodoulou pers. comm. 2016). The species is recorded as held in 21 ex situ collections (BGCI 2016).
The majority of the species distribution area is within State Forest Land, which is under protection and management. In addition, about half of the area of habitat type 9390 (Scrub and low forest vegetation with Q. alnifolia) is within Natura 2000 sites (under the Habitats Directive).
Quercus alnifolia is a forest species and thus protected by the forest law. The species is the subject of an EU LIFE project (LIFE08 NAT/CY/000453) which aimed to improve the conservation of the Scrub and low forest vegetation of Quercus alnifolia, an EU Habitats Directive Annex I habitat type (code 9390). The EU habitat type 9390 is monitored every six years under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.
