The total population size of Quercus agrifolia has not been quantified, and although it faces various stresses such as development, agriculture and disease (sudden oak death) in specific areas across its range, it is considered stable overall, with no reports of serious declines. NatureServe lists this species as globally secure (G5).

Mature Q. agrifolia are very susceptible to sudden oak death, which can wipe out an initially healthy tree within a few weeks to several years. In California the disease has reached "epidemic proportions" and there is particular risk on California's central coast. A study on Coast Live Oaks in two sites in Marin County showed infection rates of 35% in 2000 and 38% in 2001, and 16% in 2000 and 19% in 2001, respectively. Coast Live Oak mortality at the two sites increased from 8% to 15% and 6% to 8% over that year of study (McPherson et al. 2002). Fire is another potential threat, but overall recovery of the species seems to be excellent, with 96% survivorship at postfire year eight (Dagit 2002).

Urban and agricultural development do pose some threat to the species, as well as areas of firewood harvesting, and heavy grazing from livestock which affects recruitment. However, all threats are patchy and reveal problems in localized areas only, so that the overall vitality of the species can remain in good standing.

California Legislature passed the California Oak Woodland Conservation Act in 2001, recognizing the importance of California’s oak woodlands ascetically, monetarily and ecologically. Along with the act, the Oak Woodland Conservation Program was established. This program provides $10 million, allocated by the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB), to allow landowners, conservation organizations, cities and counties to gain funding for projects designed to conserve and restore California’s oak woodlands (University of California 2015).  

The species is also found ex situ in 52 botanic gardens and arboreta globally, according to Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
