The Río Grande Valles Cruceños Natural Integrated Management Area, in which this species occurs, is home to approximately 20,000 people. The population is spread across small towns and hamlets and subsist on farming and rearing livestock. Farmers largely grow staple crops, such as maize and potato, and use small-scale vegetable cultivation. Each year, the cattle are partially grazed in the forests (Wiik et al. 2019). However, as the species mainly occurs on rocky and steep slopes, it is predominantly threatened by landslides (M. Martinez pers. comm. 2024). The road from Bermejo to Samaipata where this species is found is also threatened by urban expansion, with a high demand for land purchase and construction (M. Martinez pers. comm. 2024).

This species has been recorded growing in the Río Grande Valles Cruceños Natural Integrated Management Area (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2023). The protected area was created in 2007 and encompasses 734,000 ha of land in the valleys of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The seeds of this species are not currently held by any seed bank (Genesys 2023) and there are no records of ex situ collections worldwide (BGCI 2023).
