The subpopulation near Darwin is considered threatened because of its small size. However, the Queensland plants are quite secure. They are found in areas that are not subject to development pressures or significant groundwater extraction. However, there may be risk to the species in Papua New Guinea from land use changes for logging and agriculture.

The Darwin subpopulation is believed to have stabilized since the exclusion of feral pigs and water buffaloes from the area. The species is known from at leas 75 ex situ collections (BGCI 2021). In Northern Territory the species is considered Endangered and Queensland the species is considered Least Concern (Atlas of Living Australia 2022).
