État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
According to Namoff et al. (2011), Sabana de Algodón had an estimated number of 820 mature individuals while on Beata island, there are an estimated total of 211. In two subpopulations in Trudillé, there were estimated to be 205 mature individuals. Two subpopulations were not included in their study, but they were thought to be smaller. Therefore, the population size is estimated to be fewer than 1,500. The species is very slow growing and has a generation length of 200 years, as it is thought it is unlikely to reach maturity within 100 years (Y. León pers. comm. 2024). As the uses of the species lead to mortality of reproducing individuals, it is projected that in the next 100 years there will a reduction in the population of 80% based on its increased use.

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Illegal collection of adult individuals of this species in the wild is a major threat to this species (Namoff et al. 2011). Threats include the removal of the meristem (“heart”) for sap used to produce a non-alcoholic beverage popularly known as “Mabí de Cacheo”. Adult plants are also illegally removed from the wild to be used in garden planting. Finally, the Hispaniolan Parrot (Amazona ventralis) uses the trunks of this tree as a nesting site and palms are destroyed to remove chicks and eggs for illegal trade.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
Important conservation actions include reducing the extraction of the meristem for beverage production by improving the management of Jaragua National Park through regular patrols, sanctions for infractions and approaching those who make this drink to develop alternative livelihoods. It is important to increase the distribution of this species and its population size through protection of current population, propagation in nurseries, planting in situ and ex situ and education campaigns.
