Major threats to this taxon include direct competition by invasive non-native plant species such as Axonopus fissifolius, Clidemia hirta, Cyperus meyenianus, Erigeron karvinskianus, Hedychium gardnerianum, Juncus planifolius, Melastoma candidum, Oplismenus hirtellus, Rubus rosifoliusSacciolepis indica, Schizachyrium condensatum, Setaria parviflora, and Sphaeropteris cooperiPredation and habitat degradation by non-native animals, particularly pigs, goats, and rats are also a major threat. This taxon is vulnerable to stochastic disturbance events such as landslides and hurricanes. In addition, Fortini et al. (2013) characterized this taxon with medium expected vulnerability to climate change (vulnerability indicator 0.491).

Field botanists of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) have made seed collections over the years, some of which have been propagated and occur as living collections in NTBG's McBryde garden on Kauaʻi.
