Description complète des menacesExpert
Major threats to this taxon include direct competition by invasive non-native plants such as Axonopus fissifolius, Clidemia hirta, Melastoma candium, Psidium cattleianum, and Rubus rosifolius. Predation by non-native animals, particularly pigs, goats, rats, and the banana moth are also a major threat. This taxon is vulnerable to stochastic disturbance events such as hurricanes. In addition, Fortini et al. (2013) characterized this taxon with high expected vulnerability to climate change (vulnerability indicator 0.527).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert
The taxon is listed as Endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and by the State of Hawai'i. Field botanists of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) have made seed collections over the years and plants were successfully propagated. Several plants representing several different accessions are maintained in NTBG's ex situ collections in the McBryde and Allerton gardens on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. Seeds cannot be stored conventionally (cannot be dried and cooled).
