The taxon is limited to the north slopes of Haleakalā on the island of Maui, with a total estimated population of 500–2,000 individuals represented in seven subpopulations.

This taxon is vulnerable to stochastic disturbance events such as hurricanes. In addition, Fortini et al. (2013) characterized this taxon with medium expected vulnerability to climate change (vulnerability indicator 0.448).

The taxon is not listed as Threatened or Endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act or by the State of Hawaiʻi. The seven subpopulations occur in a protected area. Field botanists of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) have made seed collections over the years, several accessions of which are planted at NTBGʻs Kahanu and McBryde Gardens. Outplantings have not yet occurred.
