État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
The species is relatively uncommon throughout a somewhat-limited range. Its rarity may be a results of poor seed production, seed dispersal or establishment abilities (Nepstad 1981 in NatureServe 2014) however its random appearance and disappearance in its habitat suggests a well-developed and active dispersal regime (NatureServe 2014). The species is most common in western New England, eastern New York and northern Michigan (Hellquist and Crow 1980 in NatureServe 2014). There are approximately 87 documented occurrences (post-1970 occurrences with specific locational information): Connecticut (1), Massachusetts (22), Vermont (27), New York (10), Pennsylvania (3), Ohio (4), Michigan (8), and Ontario (12), though it is likely there are over 100 occurrences scattered across the range (NatureServe 2014). According to Parks Canada Agency, there are between 28-35 sites for the species in Ontario and the most recent COSEWIC status update report (in 2005), estimated the Ontario population at 119,600 individuals, but this total uses data from only 12 sites so it is likely to be double this number. Trends in the number of individuals and occurrences are not known, it is likely to be undergoing a decline due to reduction in water quality since settlement, however several populations in Massachusetts and Vermont are extensive, with thousands of plants reported and (NatureServe 2014). The species is classed as globally 'Vulnerable' (note this is not the same as the IUCN Red List Category) by NatureServe (2014), however the populations in Canada are classed as 'Imperiled'. The Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council (CESCC) also class the species as 'May be at risk' (for Canada only).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
Fairly susceptible to changes in habitat quality. There is little documented threats to the species (Parks Canada Agency 2014). While the species is known to occur in the vicinity of developments, pollution and dredging have been the primary threats to this species, along with the drainage of wetlands (NatureServe 2014).. The species may rely on maintenance of high water quality, cool water temperatures and a natural habitat. Increased turbidity in glacial lakes, shoreline development and associated pollution and runoff, invasive species (e.g. exotic Curly Pondweed Potamogeton crispus), removal of beaver dams and excessive water extraction for agriculture may all also impact the species in some areas (NatureServe 2014).

Mesures de conservation recommandéesStratégies de conservation IUCNExpert
It is recommended that conservation actions need to incorporate catchment scale management and focus on the preservation of the successional changes within an entire aquatic system (watershed) with respect to the ephemeral habitat the species inhabits, and the maintenance of high-quality, pollution-free aquatic systems (NatureServe 2014, Parks Canada Agency 2014). Protection of water quality and habitat through soil conservation and pollution control measures is essential, including riparian buffer strips and restrictions on lakeshore development. More research is also required on the species ecology (including its dispersal abilities). Monitoring of the species, particularly in some states where the species is uncommon, and of its habitat quality is also recommended. The species has a management plan for its Canadian populations (Parks Canada Agency 2014), which aims to protect known habitats, conduct surveys and monitoring and fill knowledge gaps, increase public awareness and recofirm the known sites and survey potential habitats. The species is also listed on the Canadian Species at Risk Act (SARA) Schedule 1/Annexe 1 Status: Special Concern (15Aug2006), and by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) as Special Concern (05May2005).
