Potamogeton compressus is uncommon in western and northern Europe but there is no recent information on its status outside this area. It is extinct in the Czech Republic (Kaplan 2010).

Potamogeton compressus is declining or of conservation concern throughout northern and western parts of its range. However, beyond the fundamental loss and degradation of wetland habitats, the causes of this decline are unclear.
