P. coloratus is widespread and locally abundant although it has a fairly narrow ecological niche and so is vulnerable to loss and degradation of calcareous fens. It is extinct in the Czech Republic (Kaplan 2010).

P. coloratus appears to be widespread and relatively abundant throughout most of its range. However, the habitat in which it occurs is vulnerable to drying-out (due to factors such as lowering of the water table through over-abstraction from aquifers, succession to wet woodland communities) and degradation, particularly eutrophication. Currently the populations are stable and there are no major threats affecting the species at the moment.

P. coloratus is listed as Near Threatened in Sweden and as Endangered in Germany (Ludwig and Schnittler 1996) and Switzerland (Moser et al. 2002). In France, it is protected in the departement Lot and the regions Aquitaine, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Alsace, Picardie and Basse-Normandie.
