État de la populationTexte officiel évaluation IUCNExpert
This species' population size is not known. It can form huge clumps (Dransfield and Patel 2005), but is a rare palm, not often seen during surveys specifically for rattan palms (J. Dransfield pers. comm. 2012). However, it is reported as locally common in Danau Sentarum National Park (J. Dransfield pers. comm. 1986 and 1994 cited in Giesum 2000).

Description complète des menacesTexte détaillé évaluation IUCNExpert
This species is threatened by extensive habitat loss across its range. It inhabits the Critical/Endangered peat swamp forests of Borneo (WWF 2001). Peat swamp forests were the first formations to be logged on a commercial scale in Sarawak and for many years were the main source of timber (IUCN 1991). Due to uncontrolled logging practices in the last few decades, the Forest Department of Sarawak in 2003 estimated that only 18,920.45 ha or 1.47%, of peat swamp forests remained in a primary state (Envdevmalaysia 2008). Furthermore, even areas of high conservation value are being lost in Sarawak. In a more recent report by Wetlands International (2008) it was shown that in Indonesia 1.5 million ha of peatland is used for palm oil plantations, that is a quarter of Indonesia palm oil production and in Malaysia 15% of its plantation are on peatlands. Fires are also a threat, associated with forest degradation and peat fires, particularly, are increased in El Nino years. In 2002 0.8 Mha of forest in Borneo were affected by fire of which almost 0.6 Mha were peat swamp forests (Langner and Siegert 2007).
