This species is reported to be common in India, Nepal and China (Chen Sanyan et al. 1993). The number of individuals is not known.

There are no known major threats to this species, however, because of its use as a vegetable and as a source of weaving material it is usually rare near villages and paths. Some of its habitats, such as the tropical forest habitat in south Yunnan, is being destroyed as a result of large-scale permanent and commercial agriculture, replacing the traditional methods of shifting cultivation in order to grow rice and plantation tree crops (Fox 2000).

This palm is present in the following protected areas in Bhutan: Thrumsingla and Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The Hani people from the Mengsong community remove portions of stems with buds and adventitious roots to propagate the species in plantations. This species is not listed on CITES and there are no seeds in the Millennium Seed Bank, UK. In a previous conservation assessment it was listed as Vulnerable however, in the same assessment it was also listed as endemic to China and the range is understood to be larger now.
