The number of individuals is not known. Large colonies are reported from Lata Tebing Tinggi in Perak (Lim 2001) but in an unprotected area close to plantations. It has been noted as not rare across the Peninsula (Lim 2001) and as uncommon (Whitmore 1998).

The major threat to this species is habitat loss across its range. The main causes for the loss of the forests, in which this understorey palmlet grows, is large-scale clearing for plantations and agriculture, especially of rubber, coconut, and oil palm for export production (IUCN 1991). Hydropower and irrigation projects are a second major cause of forest loss, with mining and its associated road building and quarrying around limestone areas such as Perak (where this palm is present) being the third (IUCN 1991). Some of the last remnants of coastal Dipterocarp forest in the state of Perak, peninsular Malaysia, are at high risk from the expansion of nearby urban areas (WWF 2001) which may affect the future status of this palm. The subpopulation at Lata Tebing Tinggi is presently threatened by clearing for plantations in adjacent areas. The Penang Hill subpopulation is also reported to be diminishing (Lim 2001).

This species is present in Taman Negara National Park. The conservation status has previously been assessed as Vulnerable in Peninsular Malaysia and Extinct in Singapore (Walter and Gillett 1997). Cultivation in a botanic garden is recommended as part of ex situ conservation measures.
