État de la populationExpert

The occurrence of Pinanga batanensis is very restricted occurring in one locality. Therefore, it is expected that its population size is small considering species is restricted to a small area on an island. The population of this species is expected to experience future decline as the forest cover in the province is continuously declining due to agricultural land conversion and the adverse impacts of strong typhoons that frequently hit the province. These threats caused a decline forest cover across the province of at least 564 hectares from 2001 to 2018 (Global Forest Watch 2019).

Description complète des menacesExpert

One of threats being faced by the species is the loss in quality of habitat due to small-scale human intervention together with natural adversities being faced by the province annually. Board (2019) emphasized that the province faces extreme typhoons multiple times a year like no other place in Southeast Asia, which equivalently negatively impacts the biodiversity that the area caters. Global Forest Watch analysis (2019) also indicated that 564 hectares of tree cover loss was recorded in the province which can be attributed primarily to conversion to agricultural lands and kaingin making. Moreover, according to BirdLife International (2019) Mt. Iraya has the highest forested area in the province but has the least anthropogenic disturbance, aside from strong typhoons which caused the low altitude treeline in this forest area.

Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

Mt. Iraya, as being part of the Batanes Protected Landscape and Seascape (BPLS) this has been enforced to be protect from unauthorized and excessive public intervention through Republic Act no. 8991 or Proclamation no. 335, thus, the species limited population and occurrence in the area should be protected. Additionally, the prohibition of mineral extractions and quarrying within forestlands; hunting, disturbing, and destroying of wild plants and animals without permit from the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB); and cutting, gathering and removal of forest products within forestlands were all strictly enforced by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources within the entirety of Batanes Protected Landscape and Seascapes. Other than these, no other known conservation measures were initiated which specifically involve Pinanga batanensis.
