There is no quantitative information on population size. However, in Costa Rica the species has a low abundance, preferring primary forest and in general it seems to have a scarce or irregular distribution along its geographical range (Grayum 2003).

The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations, especially in the northern zone of Costa Rica due to the increasing pineapple industry.
