This species has been reported to be relatively rare (Onana 2013), however the species is locally abundant in Kribi area (Faden #86/50, Letouzey #4132).

Timber is one of the main exports of Cameroon and large amounts of forest have been granted as logging concessions (Onana and Cheek 2011). Logging represents a major threat to this species, with every collection locality either within or very near to a logging concession (Onana and Cheek 2011, Global Forest Watch 2020). This species is also threatened by agriculture, with slash and burn agricultural practices widely used across Cameroon (Onana and Cheek 2011). Satellite imagery showing increasing amounts of agricultural land conversion near this species' collection localities (Google Earth 2020). Additionally, oil palm plantations are visible near to collections in Bukaka, and to a greater extent in Kribi (Google Earth 2020, Global Forest Watch 2020, WWF 2018). Large amounts of forest have also been lost around Kribi due to urban expansion, and this may pose a threat to this species (Google Earth 2020, WWF 2018). A particular threat in this area is from the development of the Kribi Port and Industrial Complex, and the associated urbanisation and extractive industry infrastructure (Onana and Cheek 2011, WWF 2018, Foonde 2018). The port complex, which includes an industrial zone and a residential area, is being developed on a 26,000 ha site around Kribi, where it is responsible for forest loss and degradation (Romain et al. 2017, Tichafogwe and Nji 2018). Mining may also pose a threat to this species, and it has been collected within mining concessions at Bella (near Kribi) and Bukaka (Global Forest Watch 2020).

This species is not known to occur within any protected areas and it is recommended that one of its locations should be considered for formal protection (Onana and Cheek 2011). The protection of Bakaka forest reserve could be justified by the fact that it contains a large number of threatened species (Onana and Cheek 2011). There is currently one known ex-situ conservation site for this species (BGCI 2020), and further propagation of this species should be considered to strengthen wild populations (Onana and Cheek 2011). Basic data on this species' population should be collected as a baseline for future monitoring. Further research is also needed into the species' distribution and life history and ecology.
