This is a very small plant difficult to find. There is not enough data to estimate the exact population size of this species. The species was collected twice during 1970s and had not been seen since then, but two individuals were found after an intensive search in 2004, in the area nearby the original site (Okinawa Prefectural Government 2006). Since then, several individuals were found in 2008 and 2011 (A. Abe pers. comm. 2015).

The habitat and population are intrinsically very limited. The major threat to this species is habitat change by logging (Okinawa Prefectural Government 2006).

Oxygyne shinzatoi is listed on the 4th Red List of Japan, Vascular Plants (Ministry of the Environment 2012) as Critically Endangered. Its habitat is inside of a University Forest and well protected though small scale logging is ongoing. In order to strengthen the protection of the subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests including the habitat of this species, preparation for the designation of National Park is in progress.
