This species is listed as Near Threatened in the Red List of Mexican Cloud Forest Trees due to deforestation. This tree is considered to be relatively free of insect and other disease problems. It is browsed by white-tailed deer only incidentally. It is sensitive to pollutants such as oxides of sulphur or nitrogen, and to chlorine or fluorine.
