This species is resistant to several diseases, however recently extensive dieback of the species has been observed in western Slovenia and northern Italy caused by the ascomycete fungus Botryosphaeria dothidea in combination with drought conditions and high temperatures. It is affected by various fungal diseases caused by Cryphonectria parasytica and is vulnerable to attack from the European oak bark beetle (Scolytus intricatus) (Pasta et al. 2016).
