The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations. Moreover, some illegal logging activities where most locations of this species are known, are affecting it habitat.

This species is known from some protected areas in Costa Rica, such as Guanacaste Conservation Area, Arenal Volcano National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Braulio Carrillo National Park, Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, La Amistad International Park, La Cangreja National Park, Los Santos Forest Reserve and Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves / La Amistad National Park. The species is listed in Appendix II of CITES. This species was assessed as Vulnerable (VU) by Estrada et al. 2005.
