État de la populationExpert

The species is extremely rare. Only four native sites are known, all having only a single mature individual, with 0-5 seedlings or small saplings. Population trend is decreasing precipitously from populations in 1970, when at least one locality had over 50 mature individuals. Population size is less than 50 and could be less than 10 individuals.

Description complète des menacesExpert
The primary threat to the species is very rapid habitat destruction throughout its range, in particular due to commercialized agriculture of kava for national and international markets in northern Pentecost. Forested areas where the species is found are already limited and extremely fragmented. In addition, local beliefs hold that contact with or proximity to the species can cause illness or death, and there are reports that the species has been actively eradicated from some areas (see also Dowe and Cabalion, 1996).

Habitats préférentiels (classification IUCN)

  • 1_6Forest - Subtropical/Tropical Moist Lowland
Mesures de conservation recommandéesExpert

Native forest fragments where the species is found should be targeted as protected sites. Local nurseries should be established to enhance subpopulations. The status of the species as unique and threatened should be conveyed to the local people.
