For many years, this species was considered to be Extinct in the Wild (Liu et al. 2003) but nine wild subpopulations have been discovered since 2004. There are only very few plants in most of these subpopulations, and fewer than 10 plants in some (Ma et al. 2019). Specific numbers are available for the subpopulations at Yongsheng and Panzhihua, with 8 and 130 individuals, respectively (Ma et al. 2011, Ma et al. 2019). Geographical isolation, low levels of estimated gene flow among populations, low seed germination rates, and intensive agricultural activity within its native region are thought to have contributed to an historic reduction in numbers and the fragmentation of suitable habitat (Ma et al. 2019, POWO 2019). Given these factors, and the lack of conservation measures in place, it is suspected that the global wild population is small and remains in decline, and that the subpopulations are severely fragmented. Further research into population status would be beneficial in establishing a figure for the global population size, and in validating the contemporary population trend for the species.

Historically, the natural habitat of the Golden Lotus Banana has become highly fragmented as a result of intense agricultural activity (Ma et al. 2019, POWO 2019). Across its native range, large tracts of land are used in agriculture (GFW 2020) and, given its use in cultivation as fodder for livestock (Liu et al. 2003, POWO 2019), it is considered probable that wild individuals also come under pressure from this activity. The species is also highly sought after for its use as food, fodder and medicine, as well as in horticulture worldwide; as such, the exploitation of wild individuals for this purpose may pose a further threat. Some of the documented subpopulations comprise fewer than 10 individuals (Ma et al. 2019); invariably, such small numbers exacerbate the severity of any threats in action.

There are no reported germplasm accessions for Musella lasiocarpa (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2020), but 42 botanical gardens are listed as sites of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2020). It is not known to occur within any protected areas (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2020). Given the precarious status of the wild population, conservation measures including habitat protection and the banking of seed germplasm are recommended (Ma et al. 2019). The species was assessed as Data Deficient in China's Red List of Higher Plants (Qin et al. 2017).
