Following extensive field observations between 2005 and 2007 in Yunnan province, Musa zaifui was only observed on the 2006 expedition; three populations were found with some five individual plants with suckers (Häkkinen and Wang 2008). The current population trend is unknown but is inferred to be declining owing to the conversion of forested land to agricultural land use along the eastern riverbank of Da Yingjiang River. Given the very restricted nature of the population, further research into status and trends is required.

Yingjiang and Longchuan counties are part of a seismically active zone: since the year 2000, multiple strong earthquakes have hit the region, as well as heavy rains leading to mudslides (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies 2004, 2011, Yin et al. 2017). Given the very restricted population size, and the riverbank habitat of the only known wild individuals, subsidence caused by a single natural disaster could feasibly drive the whole population to extinction. Additionally, based on satellite imagery, the forested riverbank of the Da Yingjiang lies adjacent to a large area of agricultural land. Through comparison to satellite imagery in 2006, when the only known collections were made, it can be seen that there has been agricultural encroachment towards the riverbank. This is very likely to have led to the loss of suitable habitat for the species, as well as possible ecosystem degradation though the run-off of agricultural effluents.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). This species is not known to occur in any protected areas (Protected Planet 2019). Living specimens are cultivated at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (Häkkinen and Wong 2008), however, it is not known to be conserved ex situ elsewhere (BGCI 2019, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). As such, gathering of wild germplasm material for ex situ conservation from extant wild plants is a conservation priority.
