In the wild, the species is only known from the type individual, despite multiple botanical expeditions to the vicinity of the type locality. The type individual is no longer present so there is some doubt as to whether there remain any extant plants in the wild (P. Markey pers. comm. 2019). Survey work focussed on less accessible areas of Lan Yü Island is essential to establish whether any wild individuals remain or if the plant is, in fact, Extinct.

Lan Yü Island is home to a large number of endemic species and has experienced very minimal land use conversion (Hsieh 2002, Späth et al. 2018). Possible threats include devastating super typhoons and the construction of a nuclear waste facility on the southeastern tip of the island (Marsh et al. 1993, Späth et al. 2018); however, it is not known whether these threats pose a specific risk to this species.

The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). The recorded collection was not made in a protected area (Protected Planet 2019). It is not known to be conserved ex-situ (BGCI 2019, Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). As such, gathering of wild germplasm material for ex-situ conservation from any extant wild plants is a conservation priority. However, it was assessed as Extinct in the Wild in Taiwan (Editorial Committee of the Red List of Taiwan Plants 2017) and no wild plants have been observed since the type collection was made (P. Markey pers. comm. 2019). Taking into account its absence from ex-situ conservation, and the reported lack of extant plants in the wild, it is suspected that the species may be Extinct.
