The genus Musa is listed in Annex I of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) which aims to guarantee sustainable agriculture and food security through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use (FAO 2009). One botanical garden is listed as a site of ex situ conservation for this species (BGCI 2019) but there are no known germplasm accessions (Genesys Global Portal on Plant Genetic Resources 2019). It is not known whether the species occurs in any protected areas (Protected Planet 2019). It should be noted that Häkkinen (2013) ascribed an epitype for the species on account of the loss of the herbarium specimen at Phu Ho Fruit Research Centre; this may also represent the loss of the only known plant in ex situ conservation. As such, gathering of germplasm material for ex situ conservation from any extant wild plants is a conservation priority.
